The Evolution of EDM: Here & Now Quarantine Set Edition

Source: David Guetta’s FB page

By Ryan Hayes

In the second iteration of The Evolution of EDM we take a small detour to focus on the present. With the global entertainment industry coming to a grinding stand still and millions around the world undergoing self-quarantine you'd think the constant flow of music we are used to may turn to a trickle of releases and live sets. Artists around the world have risen to the occasion and taken the opportunity to provide their audiences with premium live content. In some cases debut artist sets, in others mixes years in the making—regardless here are 12 essential sets from the last seven days of quarantine.

First up—David Guetta. Currently experiencing a massive renaissance, he was supposed to close out this year's Ultra, and he came through for fans with a new mix for SiriusXM Virtual Ultra Music Festival. If you are expecting pop Guetta this isn't it. The set leans towards his Jack Back alter-ego and his current collaborative efforts with Morten. It's worth listening to for the intro edit of Titanium alone. A new main stage Guetta, taking inspiration from his roots, for a new house focused generation.

Drezo

Last weekend Insomniac gifted ravers with a Virtual Rave-A-Thon featuring artists from the postponed Beyond Wonderland. While there were a slew of artists worth listening too Drezo stands out with his pulsing dark bruting version of house. It's all consuming and the perfect mix to drown out the world for just a little while.

Madeon

His inaugural Ironing Board Session (he hinted it may become a weekly fixture for the time being) is just something you have to experience. Genuine to the core and immensely talented. The stream will put a smile on your face and turn you day around...it is that simple. Just listen to it.

Corona Sabbath (Diplo)

Diplo has been hitting quarantine life hard, bringing music to the people multiple days a week. Last Saturday for his weekly Corona Sabbath he had Dillon Francis swing by for a back-to-back set. The two have obviously played together before, but a new mix from them is always welcome. The entire stream is over two and a half hours long and focuses on house music. It's laid back, and perfect to have on during the day while you attempt to be productive.

Destructo

All My Friends head honcho Destructo blessed fans who have been following ship adventures for years—Holy Ship through Friendship—with a six hour long Sunday Sermon from his living room. Usually we get a live Sunrise Sermon set once a year, so this was a very welcome journey for fans. If you are looking for a quarantine musical pilgrimage, this is it

Calvin Harris - Love Regenerator Livestream

We don't typically get anything live from Harris these days. Outside of his Vegas residency and a handful of headlining festival spots, none of which are streamed, he keeps to himself. So the inaugural live performance by his Love Regenerator side project was a very welcome surprise. This isn't the sticky pop Harris that fans have come to know over the last decade. This is a departure, a deep dive that mixes the past and present to revive rave sentiments of old with a modern twist.

Morgan Page

Page's Quarantine Sessions have been hitting in full force for the last week. With regular broadcasts, always accompanied with a different wine pairing, Page has been showing audiences he is capable of spanning numerous genres/styles. This particular mix is more of a deep dive and a deviation from Page's more regular big room focused sets.

Disclosure

Live from Self Isolation F.M. this is Disclosure's first Kitchen Mix. After many year's of relative obscurity the brothers recently returned from their hiatus with a slew of new tracks. The mix showcases their current frame of mind and may be an indication for what we can expect moving forward.

Odesza

The long awaited NO.SLEEP Mix.12 has finally arrived. It has been over two years, before the release of A Moment Apart, since the duo has released a mix. Atmospheric and ethereal, the mix showcases Odesza's signature sound and it is the perfect rainy day escape.

Paul Van Dyk & Chris Bekker

Live from Berlin, as part of DJ Mag's House Party series, these two trance producers are bringing quality long form trance sets to the masses. Their DJ Mag stream came in at just over three and a half hours. They also have a  PC Music Night back-back that lasted for over five hours. Don't miss one of the god fathers of trance doing his thing—perfect for getting you through long days.

Purple Haze (Sander van Doorn)

A true Purple Haze set—in my opinion—is always a treat. Sander is a world class technical DJ and although his style has drifted over the years Purple Haze is pure unfettered trance at its very best.  Fast paced, enthralling, and seamless...don't miss this one. Click here to watch it.

Oliver Heldens

Why? Because the man has fun. This is his Virtual Ultra set, and to be honest the announcer and set up of the SiriusXM stream provides a sense of normalcy to these uncertain times. But mostly, its just fun to listen to. Give it a listen, it will give you a jolt or energy and put a smile on your face when you may need it the most.

Interview: Topher Jones

Topher Jones, the Chicago based DJ/Producer who had a breakout year in 2012 with the smash hits "Brohammer" and "Hello Chicago", is one busy guy. Not only did he just finish a huge tour supporting his dear friends Tritonal, but now he's on board his first bus tour supporting Morgan Page for a string of shows in Western Canada. With a 3D Experience Tour show in Calgary tonight, Edmonton tomorrow, and a sold out show in Vancouver this Saturday, I thought it would be a good time to catch up with Topher Jones and find out what he's been up to, enjoy:

EDM Canada: How did you get started as a DJ/Producer?

Topher Jones: About 14 years ago. I was just really into music and wanted to learn how to DJ so I got some turntables (laughs). That's really kind of it – nothing magical. 6 years later I started writing music. So that's how it got started.

What kind of software did you use to start writing music?

I think I had Ableton at first, and then Logic pretty quickly after that because I didn't like Ableton very much.

Describe your style

I don't know how to describe it. (laughs) It's because there's a wide variety of stuff. I just make some good dance music that I hope people enjoy that evokes emotion from people. It might be uplifting sing-a-long stuff or the more clubby and ragey. I make emotional music I guess.

You've had such a break out year with Brohammer and Hello Chicago in 2012, did you feel any pressure to top yourself this year?

No I don't worry about that stuff. I just continue to write music that I love and try to grow as an artist. I don't think about things year by year but rather what I want to do in five years and how to get there. I don't look back and think of what to do next year, but rather I take steps to accomplish what I want to do in five years and go from there.

What is your vision for the next 5 years?

I have an idea but it's always changing. I want to be doing some big big things.

You were on a tour supporting Tritonal earlier this year, how did that experience compare with the current one with the Morgan Page 3D Experience Tour?

It's only been 24 hours that I've been on the Morgan Page tour but the first 24 hours has been great. I do prefer being on a bus instead of flying everyday as it saves you a lot of time. The Tritonal tour was amazing, Chad and Dave are two of my really close friends so we had so much fun. It was really special to go on tour with them and this tour with Morgan is very special too and a really cool opportunity as well.

Is this the first time you're sharing the decks with Morgan Page and Beltek?

It is.

What can fans expect to see from Topher Jones when you'll play for them in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary?

They'll get to hear 3 or 4 brand new tracks that aren't released yet as well as the big tracks that have done well for me including some other of my favourite tracks at the moment.

Do you have any news or new releases set for 2013, 2014 that you'd like to share?

“Talk About It” came out last month and it has done very well and it went to #2 on hype machine which is really cool. The remixes of the track will come out on December 3rd and those will be really really special. I have a club mix of “Talk About It” that is really meant more for the clubs and there's an amazing trap remix done by K Theory. There's also an awesome deep house remix by a guy named Happy Face Soul, so it's a really diverse package and I think it'll do really well.

My thanks to Topher Jones for the interview!

If you haven't had the chance to listen to Topher's latest track called "Talk About It", then get on it because it's really addictive as Katie Sky's vocal is mesmerizing and the beat is quite catchy:

The official remixes for "Talk About It" will be coming out on December 3rd and will feature a big room remix from Topher, a trap remix from K-Theory, and a deep house remix from Happy Face Soul.

Topher Jones will be supporting Morgan Page on his 3D Experience Tour in Calgary tonight, Edmonton tomorrow, and will be playing to a sold out show in Vancouver this Saturday.

Interview: Beltek

Beltek (AKA Martin Bijelic), the eclectic DJ/Producer from Slovenia, has just joined the Morgan Page 3D experience tour bus last week and is ready to start the 2nd Canadian leg of the tour starting tomorrow in Calgary. Beltek's first big break happened in 2007 when he won the Producer of the Year competition organized by Pete Tong. Since then Martin has created an extensive and diverse discography that spans across many genres and styles. But recently his style has converged more towards a mixture between electron and progressive house. Makes sense since Beltek's live sets are definitely high energy. In this following interview Beltek tells EDM Canada about his beginnings, his evolution as an artist, first impressions of the new tour with Morgan Page, and his view on the perfect track. Check it out:

EDM Canada: How did you get started as a DJ/Producer? Did you become a DJ or Producer First?

Beltek: It all started maybe 10 years ago when my brother brought home mixtapes from various DJs. At first I didn't understand electronic music because it all sounded the same to me. Back in the day it wasn't so much vocal or melodic, it was pretty harsh in Europe as it was more techno and hard house. After a while I started picking it up, especially hard house and progressive from the UK. So I started listening to that and checking out all sorts of DJs. I also wanted to produce but at the beginning it was really a hard struggle especially because at that time I was still in school and later on I had gotten a job so I wasn't a full time producer. I would say that I've been a professional producer for the last 4-5 years. At first I had become a producer and secondly I became a DJ when I started with vinyl at that time.

When did you start DJ'ing?

I started around 7 years ago but I'd consider myself more as a producer than a DJ.

Describe the Beltek style.

My main goal is to always evolve. My current style is a mixture between electro and progressive house. So something in between and everything out of the box as well. I like all sorts of music and not just EDM. Sometimes I'd mix in some drum and bass track at the end of my set so I'm not bound to just one genre. A good track is a good track, right?

You have a lot of diversity in your discography from trance, techno, electro house, and progressive house – have you purposely tried to create different styled tracks or have you created them based on inspiration at the time?

Just based on inspiration. When I start to produce a track in my studio it's never like “oh wow this style is popular or this guy is popular, let's do a copy of that track!”, it's not like that at all as I create tracks based on what I feel. I like to play some melodic tracks, hard tracks, breaks, so it all depends on my current inspiration. Techno was a big part of my life, especially in the beginning. I am Slovenian and we have a very successful techno DJ named UMEK. He was one of the biggest influences when I started.

I noticed that you two created a track together. Has UMEK played a role in your career?

Yeah definitely, he's certainly one of my role models. Before I started to take music more seriously I was into more non melodic stuff, but now I am around 99% all about melodies. For me a perfect track, needs to have at least one live instrument (guitar, piano), a vocal, and a cool bass drum rhythm section. It doesn't depend on the genre of course.

Have you created that perfect track yet?

Fortunately not. (Laughs) If I'm honest I don't know if I ever will because I'm never satisfied with my work as I always try to evolve and discover new things and better myself. It's a struggle but that's what keeps me going.

You just entered the Morgan Page tour bus – Is this your first tour bus experience?

This is actually my first bus tour so I'm excited as *beep*. (Laughs) I just had my first gig yesterday at Park City, Utah and it was sold out. I must say that I was totally impressed because it's a city of only 7,000 and the crowd was so energetic and they knew almost all of my tracks. I didn't even know that I had fans in Park City and it was such an amazing feeling. To kick start the tour with that kind of performance was a dream.

What can fans expect from Beltek at your upcoming gigs in Vancouver, Vernon, Calgary, and Edmonton?

The basic point of my performance is to get the maximum energy out of me and try to transform it to the crowd on the dancefloor. Every time that people try to see me they will experience a real energetic performance with a lot of positive energy and powerful tracks. I'm not a really easy going radio type of DJ (Laughs) as I try to create a lot of energy in the crowd. I can't wait. Especially Canadians because I love the crowd in Canada as the crowd was nuts in Vancouver the last time I was there in August. Can't wait to go back.

My thanks to Beltek for the interview!

Beltek, along with Morgan Page and Topher Jones will be playing 3 Canadian dates this week starting with Calgary tomorrow night, Edmonton on Thursday, and finally on Saturday for a sold out show in Vancouver
