Exclusive interview with ARTY

This past Friday, Russian trance superstar ARTY made a stop in Calgary before another round of tour dates and his anticipated Miami Music Week sets with Armada and Anjunabeats. And in typical fashion at The Palace Theatre, his set was full of unreleased bangers that had the crowd going all night long. I had the chance to sit down with him and talk new music, life on the road and some surprises along the way:

Andrew: Welcome back to Cowtown! You’re usually here during Stampede in the summer but what brings you back before the start of spring?

Arty: My friends! That’s what brings me back and of course the amazing crowd. It’s my fourth time at Palace Theatre and it’s one of my favorite venues, every time I come back here I know it’s going to be a great show.

How do you balance shows on the road while preparing for a major festival at the same time?

Whenever I play in the clubs, it’s just a fact that I’m going to be playing a longer set. It’s also a different vibe, you have more time to make your set a journey and you have more of a connection with the crowd. My perfect set is in waves where you hit certain points, then go a different way while telling a story. With festivals, it’s hard because you only have an hour, so you try to squeeze as much as you can, and you’re usually 50 meters away from the crowd. that’s probably the biggest difference.

You’ve put out so much music lately both as yourself and ALPHA 9, what was the process like creating all of those tracks in such a short amount of time?

This coming week is the beginning of something that will be very exciting: the first track off my EP, also the first part of my album that I’m releasing later this year. It’s 12 club records I made with my friends. It really started out with us messing around in the studio in Russia and we did one, two, three and then four tracks together. It kept growing and we figured we could release it as an EP but then realized it could be so much bigger. I also wanted to create a platform to give these guys some attention. One of them I’ve known since I was 14 who actually introduced me to dance music, another since 2008, so that will be an amazing amazing concept.

ALPHA 9 we just released a new track on Anjunabeats as my way of coming back to the Anjuna family. And we’ll have much more!

Let’s talk about “You’re Not Alone”, your first single of the year with Griff Clawson, what was the process like on creating the track with him?

Griff, he’s an amazing guy, he has an incredible voice and we also made three new tracks too. There are also two other co-writers on the track from “Daydreams”, they sent me this idea and I kept listening and was so captivated by the verses. So, we got together in the studio, wrote new lyrics, melody and a hook. Then took the track and added a new harmony, made a basic drop and sent it to my friend Nikita for feedback, and he sent me back a new sound and we finished the track on his end and then when it was ready to go I took the stems back and that took me 2 and a half months to finish with all the stems and polish it and make sure it sounds the way I want it to. It was a long process but I’m really happy with how it turned out!

There have been a number of DJs that have put their careers on hold to give their mental health a break, you once tweeted out that it can get lonely sometimes, how are you able to cope with that and are there any new techniques you’ve done in the last few years on the road to improve your health?

The one thing I figured since I spend so much time in the studio every day is to go to the gym and meet up with my friends. I only have a certain amount of time to meet up with them though, especially when you’re on the road, afterwards you’re tired, your back home and you have this massive anxiety on your shoulders because your body and mental state are exhausted from playing all those shows. But when I come back, I always conference call with my friends from Russia and twice a week I talk to my parents. But you have to stick to it, if you don’t do any physical activity and sit in the studio all day long it’s like driving yourself up a mountain, it’s important to take breaks and to figure out your routine. I have one, go grab coffee, make breakfast, hit the gym, go to the studio and then go back again the gym at night and then back to the studio, that’s basically my day and when you figure it all out, it becomes easy and you know you have it all laid out and no freak out as much.

Before we go, Lily Collins was in your “Save Me Tonight” music video, but if you had a famous actor play you in an upcoming video for a new single, who would you pick?

Noah Centineo! He directed the video, and he’s a talented actor too. I hope that he’s directs some upcoming videos!

Big thanks to Arty for letting me talk to him before his set! Check out Outburst here: https://armas1725.lnk.to/Outburst

Cash Cash helps Calgary wrap up 2019 on a high note

Roseland DJ trio Cash Cash treated Calgarians to an energetic sold out performance at The Palace Theatre on Saturday the 28th, the final major dance show to hit the city before the new year.

The night itself was a big deal, considering 3 hours north of the city Edmonton wrapped up their 2-day massive “Get Together” festival and there would be no major New Year’s Eve spectacular to follow. But the boys were ready to send off 2019 and their set was chocked full of their hits throughout the decade.

It was also special with an all-local opening line up consisting of Titus1, Dirtystylez and Confined before the trio took the stage.

Confined kicked things off at 9 pm sharp with a groovy house set. Dirtystylez jumped on after 10:15 pm, kicking things off with a remix of Sean Paul’s “Temperature” and later on Loud Luxury’s “Body” that switched to Tiesto’s “Boom” as the drop, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The highlight of his set came just before 11:30 pm when he dropped Vintage Cultures remix of “Radioactive” and almost everyone on the dancefloor had their hands up well before the drop.

At 11:30 pm, Calgary EDM legend Titus1 hopped on the decks with the help of locals Atwood & Andy Villa. Those Calgarians that go to EDM shows at the Palace know how hard Titus1 goes, and he did not disappoint, kicking things off with a Kernkraft 400/Rattle bootleg and keeping it going with the heaviest house and top 40 mashups. The rest of the set was mostly a b2b with Atwood and Andy Villa wrapped things up with a few bass house tracks.

Cash Cash emerged right after 12:45 am and started things off with a slightly faster set, following it with their signature hit “Surrender”. The rest of the night was a circle of different speeds, pitching it up to 140 bpm with an acapella of  Kanye West’s “Power”, going back to 128 bpm with “Belong” and slowing it down with their radio hits “Can We Pretend” & “Millionaire”. This went on for their entire set, but every time the group switched tempos, it was banger after banger so there weren’t any awkward gaps. They also managed to squeeze in more of their work featuring “Bada Boom”, “Finest Hour”, “All My Love” & “Matches” plus a few throwbacks from earlier on including “Like A G6”, “Sandstorm” and even “Basket Case” by Green Day.

Just after 2:15 am, the boys bid adieu with their staple “Take Me Home”. A great way to end not only an electrifying set but 2019 on a high note.

Bear Grillz + Company Rock Palace Theatre

Photo: Max Weinberger

By Andrew Walker

It was a tad chilly on the final Saturday of November, but that didn’t stop dubstep fans from packing Palace Theater to see Bear Grillz on his Demons Delux Fall Tour, the final stop on the Canadian leg. Better yet, fans were excited to see this tweet from the DJ himself the day of the show:

That gave Calgarians an extra reason to celebrate, while making Edmontonians jealous as his Edmonton show was cancelled the night before due to bad weather at the Denver airport.

Fortunately, Calgary was given the all clear and doors opened right at 9 pm to local talent warming up the crowd.

At 10 pm, the dancefloor was more than half full when OG Nixin took to the decks, playing all the heavy hits including a taste of Skrillex’s “Cinema”. Somnium Sound followed at 11 pm with another heavy dose that included a brief pause of the crowd belting “Sun & Moon” just before Lucii took over.

Lucii’s set was on another level and those that watched her Bass Canyon set were in for a treat and she did not disappoint. Her set included a quick throwback to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and her original “I Need Your High” which she sang live along with others. A neat fact from the night was that it was the debut performance for both OG Nixin and Lucii in Cowtown with OG Nixin smiling before he left the venue saying, “That crowd was lit, I love Calgary.”

After a quick changeover, a furry head with red lit eyes and mouth appeared on stage and the crowd was ready. The two subs in front of the stage were finally cranked and Bear Grillz threw down one of the heaviest sets Palace Theater have seen in quite some time. Spending equal time with the mic and mixing, the Denver based DJ included “Happier”, “Heads Will Roll” & “Thnks fr th Mmrs” before massive drops.

A great way to warm up from the cold weather and reunite with the dubstep community before the beginning of exams and the Christmas rush.

NERVO + Young Bombs rock FUSION Grey Cup

By Andrew Walker

When the hometown Stampeders were eliminated from the Grey Cup a few weeks ago during semis, most Calgarians would feel like the Grey Cup and the yearly festive activities wouldn’t be the same, especially since the championship game was held at home. But that didn’t stop local dance music goers from packing the inaugural FUSION tent outside McMahon Stadium to witness Australian DJ duo NERVO grace the decks, the first time the twin-sisters were back in Cowtown since 2015.

The FUSION tent itself was massive, lots of room with a massive centre bar and food to the right. Although the place had heaters, it wasn’t particularly warm, but once the openers took the stage, fans had no trouble warming up with the beat.

The night kicked off earlier than most shows would even consider with doors opening at 7 pm. Local talent warmed up the crowd with some 90s throwbacks and groovy house.

Vancouver based DJ duo Young Bombs took the stage at 10:30 pm and that’s when the event went to another level. The last time the duo played in Calgary was back in the summer of 2017 when they opened up for The Chainsmokers, and just like last time, they did not disappoint. The duo kicked things off with some bassy house, switching to trap, then dropping crowd favourites such as Still Dre and their remix of Young Dumb & Broke and Starry Eyes.

To help finish the night, twin sisters Olivia & Miriam hopped on stage just before midnight and the crowd was ready for some NERVO. The sisters kicked things off with their smash hit “Revolution” along with crowd favorites Great Spirit, “Old Town Road”, “Al Pacinio” & “Infinity”. Two notable highlights include Miriam sharing a bottle of Jägermeister with some of the fans front row and treating everyone to a live performance of their new track, “Faded”. The moment was also special considering it was the first time they played it in Canada. NERVO ultimately went above and beyond their set time of 1 am, giving fans an extra special moment. A great way to end the night and send football and EDM fans home happy.
